The University Singers competed in three categories -- Renaissance Program, Mixed Choir Program and Free Program -- and reached the final round in each. In addition to the top prize, the Utahns won the Ronsard Prize (best performance of a Renaissance piece based on a poem by Ronsard), the Ë Coeur Joie International Prize for best French diction, the Oeuvre de Creation Prize for the best newly composed work in the competition (the University Singers commissioned "Flos ut rosa Floruit" for double choir, from New York composer William Hawley, who will share half the prize money), second place in the Mixed Choir category (University Singers director Brady Allred noted no first prize was given), and first prize in Free Program. The choir received more than 4,000 Euros, or $5,000, in prize money. "As winners of the Grand Prix we are automatically entered into the European Grand Prix for Choral Singing in 2006 to be held in Tolosa, Spain, which is considered the 'world championship of choral art,' " Allred said in an e-mail. The University Singers were among 18 choirs from 12 nations competing in Tours.
