2005 The University of Utah Singers are headed to Europe this week for a monthlong tour in France, the Netherlands, Germany and Italy. The tour includes a major festival and a choral competition in France. "It's been a very busy year," said Brady Allred, director of choral conducting at the U. Besides the 45-voice University Singers, Allred leads the A Cappella Choir and Women's Chorus. The U. choir will be the only U.S.-based ensemble at the Festival International de Chant Choral in Nancy, France, Allred said. After singing there Wednesday through May 8, the singers head for Amsterdam and Utrecht, the Netherlands, for a little more seasoning, then return to France for the Florilge Vocal de Tours International Competition. "It's a big deal," Allred said, but "I'm confident the singers will do well. They've memorized almost 40 pieces to take on the trip." Performances in Strasbourg, France; Munich, Germany; and a handful of Italian cities will follow. "They are going to be performing 20 to 25 concerts," Allred said. "In my experience, collegiate choirs on tour get as close to professional singing as possible." A pretour concert tonight in Libby Gardner Concert Hall will feature a guest choir: the University of Santo Tomas Singers from Manila, Philippines, under the baton of Prof. Fidel G. Calalang Jr. -- Catherine Reese Newton Bon voyage * The University of Utah Singers perform tonight at 7:30 in Libby Gardner Concert Hall at the U. * Tickets are $7; $3 for students.
